Statement by Iraq at the Sixth Session of the Conference on the Establishment of a Middle East Zone Free of Nuclear Weapons and Other WMD

Statement by Iraq at the Sixth Session of the Conference on the Establishment of a Middle East Zone Free of Nuclear Weapons and Other WMD

In its statement, Iraq condemns a 2023 statement by an Israeli official suggesting the use of a nuclear bomb on Gaza, calling it a grave threat to peace and international law. Iraq urges Israel to join the Non-Proliferation Treaty as a non-nuclear state, place its nuclear facilities under IAEA safeguards, and adhere to all relevant treaties. It emphasises the importance of multilateral cooperation and the universality of disarmament agreements, reaffirming that the conference complements but does not replace the 1995 NPT Middle East Resolution and related UN Security Council decisions. Iraq welcomes the continued participation of the UK, China, France, and Russia in the conference and urges the US to reconsider its participation.
