Statement by Oman at the Sixth Session of the Conference on the Establishment of a Middle East Zone Free of Nuclear Weapons and Other WMD

Oman stresses that establishing a Middle East Free Zone is a strategic necessity to strengthen collective regional security and stability. Addressing evolving regional challenges should not be in isolation from adopting a comprehensive regional approach based on cooperation, de-escalation, building confidence, and addressing strategic uncertainty resulting from the existence of nuclear capabilities outside international safeguards and monitoring regimes. It emphasizes that recent developments urge for a comprehensive approach to regional security, with the establishment of the zone as one of its fundamental pillars. The statement argues that sustainable peace cannot be achieved without a collective security approach that addresses the root causes of instability, foremost among which are the proliferation of weapons, the absence of common risk control mechanisms, and regional institutional mechanisms for consultation and cooperation on WMD risks.
