Statement by the US at the Conference on Disarmament on Negative Security Assurances (Geneva, March 2024)

The statement reaffirms the US position on NSA, which, in accordance with its declaratory policy, as iterated in its 2022 Nuclear Posture Review, already offers a unilateral negative security assurance to all non-nuclear weapon states that are party to the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty and in compliance with their nuclear nonproliferation obligations. It also notes that negative security assurances are best provided through mechanisms like NWFZs.
