Statement by the United States at the 2019 NPT PrepCom on regional issues

The statement asserts US’ position on Iran, emphasizing the need for bringing maximum pressure to compel Iran into negotiating a new deal that addresses Iran’s destabilizing regional activities, its development and proliferation of ballistic missiles, and its nuclear program. The statement also expresses concern over Syria’s suspected nuclear activities and its non-cooperation with the IAEA. The United States maintains that achieving a WMDFZ in the Middle East requires regional dialogue on practical steps to build trust and promote an environment conducive to such a zone. In the absence of participation by all regional states, the United States will not attend the conference.
