Statement by the United States at the 73rd session of the General Assembly on regional disarmament and security

This statement outlines the United States’ position on the JCPOA, which it deems ineffective in achieving regional and international peace and security. The United States asserts that to achieve these objectives, any agreement with Iran must address Iran’s missile development and proliferation, its compliance with the CWC, and its support for terrorism. The United States views the Arab states’ proposal for a conference on establishing a WMDFZ in the Middle East as an attempt to use the conference to dictate terms and modalities for pursuing such a zone and lacks the consensus of all regional states. Consequently, the United States does not support this proposal but stands ready to support any regional proposals that have consensus support among all the regional states and are based in direct and inclusive dialogue.
