Statement by the United States at the 2023 NPT PrepCom on regional issues, including with respect to the Middle East and the implementation of the 1995 Resolution on the Middle East

The statement expresses concerns regarding Iran’s non-cooperation with the IAEA and the production of highly enriched uranium, and Syria’s undeclared nuclear activities. The statement reiterates the US commitment to establishing a WMDFZ in the Middle East. It acknowledges the positive role of the UN Conference in establishing the zone yet questions its effectiveness in convening a direct dialogue among all the regional states. US non-participation in the conference does not impede the implementation of the 1995 resolution.
