Statement by the IAEA at the 4th session of the conference on the Establishment of a Middle East Zone Free of Nuclear Weapons and other WMD

The statement highlights the IAEA’s support for the conference and notes its participation in other meetings related to the establishment of an ME WMDFZ organized by UNODA and UNIDIR.  It highlights that the IAEA also delivered presentations to the intersessional meetings of the Working Committee. The statement highlights that NWFZ treaties require parties to accept the comprehensive IAEA safeguards. The statement notes the states of the conference, which have updated their SQPs since 2019, and welcomes the statement made by the Minister of Energy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which has recently rescinded the SQP and implemented full Comprehensive Safeguards Agreements.
