Statement by the Biological Weapon Convention-Implementation Support Unit at the 4th session of the conference on the Establishment of a Middle East Zone Free of Nuclear Weapons and other WMD

The statement notes that 18 Members of the conference are parties to the BWC, three have signed but not ratified, and an additional three have neither signed nor ratified.  The 9th BWC RevCon was able to create a new Working Group on the Strengthening of the Convention, open to all state parties, which aims to identify, examine, develop measures, and make recommendations for strengthening the Convention. It will address measures on compliance and verification and provide recommendations on the establishment of a mechanism to fully implement the Convention. The statement asked states to refer to the background document submitted to the conference for more details.
