Statement by Syria at the 2nd Session of the Conference on the Establishment of a Middle East Zone Free of Nuclear Weapons and Other WMD

The statement expressed Syria's support for the establishment of a WMDFZ in the region as evidenced by submitting a draft resolution to the Security Council when it was a permanent member in 2002-2003, which was not adopted due to the US support for the Israeli position. It expressed disappointment in the US, as a sponsoring states of the 1995 Middle East Resolution for not taking practical step to implement the resolution. It further expressed its disappointment in both Israel and the US for their refusal to participate in the conference. It calls on Israel to join the NPT and subject its facilities to the IAEA safeguards, as an essential step on achieving an ME WMDFZ.
