Statement by Syria at the 3rd Session of the Conference on the Establishment of a Middle East Zone Free of Nuclear Weapons and Other WMD

Statement by Syria at the 3rd Session of the Conference on the Establishment of a Middle East Zone Free of Nuclear Weapons and Other WMD

The statement expressed the disappointment in the failure to reach a consensus at the 2020 NPT RevCon. Syria emphasises that the conference works as a parallel path to the implementation of the 1995 resolution, and not a replacement. The statement accuses Israel, and the United States of ignoring international will and the obstruction of the process. It mentions that the region's efforts in creating a Zone have always colluded with Israel's refusal to join the NPT and subject its nuclear facilities to the IAEA safeguards. The statement continued to blame the US for its protection of Israel's nuclear capabilities. The statement further highlights Syria's efforts in joining several WMD-related treaties and submitting a draft resolution to the security council when it was a permanent member in 2002-2003. The statement urged that no link should be made between establishing a ME WMDFZ and peace process in the region.
