In his speech at the UN General Assembly, Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy urged all countries in the Middle East, as well as the five permanent members of the Security Council to formally state their support for a ME WMDFZ; for all states of the region to accede to the WMD international conventions and to work towards holding the postponed 2012 ME WMDFZ conference by the Spring of 2014. In response almost all LAS states sent letters to the UN Secretary-General in support of the ME WMDFZ.
