P5 express their support for a ME WMDFZ

In response to the Bush Middle East arms control initiative, representatives of the P5 held three rounds of meetings in 1991 and 1992. The concluding statement of the first meeting expressed support for establishing a WMDFZ in the Middle East. It noted that critical steps towards this goal included full implementation of UN Security Council resolution 687, as well as measures to be adopted by states of the region such as a freeze and eventual elimination of surface-to-surface missiles, inclusion of all nuclear activities under IAEA safeguards, a ban on the import and production of materials for use in nuclear weapons, and accession of all countries in the region to the Chemical Weapons Convention. In the second meeting, the P5 agreed to compare their national export controls related to WMD to promote further harmonization.
